Gwangju set early K-League pace

Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix are the surprise early pace-setters in the 2009 K-League season as the military side moved two points clear at the top of the standings after their 1-0 win over Incheon on the fifth round of matches. Kim Myung-joong was the goal hero in the 53rd minute, securing Gwangju's fourth win of the season and extending their unbeaten start to the year, in which they have already recorded more victories than they managed throughout the whole of the 2008 campaign.

Defending champions Suwon recorded their first win in five attempts, with goals from Lee Sang-ho and Edu enough to see off bottom side Busan. Also picking up their first three points of the season were Seongnam who enjoyed a 3-1 win over Pohang Steelers to give Shin Tae-yong his first league triumph as manager.

2008 National League top scorer Kim Young-hu was on the scoresheet twice for Gangwon as they shared six goals with Chunnam Dragons, whilst a last-minute effort from Ko Chang-hyun gave Daejeon a share of the spoils down in Ulsan after Kim Sang-wook had earlier put the home side ahead.

Gyeongnam notched up their fifth straight 1-1 draw of the season at home to FC Seoul, whilst Kim Ju-hwan and Bang Dae-jong were the goal heroes for Daegu as they defeated Jeju 2-1.

In the opening round of the National League season, both Incheon Korail and Goyang KB got off the storming starts, recording 4-0 victories over Hongcheon and Yesan respectively. Defending champions Ulsan Mipo Dockyard went down 2-1 away to Ansan Hallelujah, whilst last season's beaten championship finalists Suwon City opened their season with a 3-1 home win over Nowon Hummel.

Seoul United went top of the K3 League as their 1-0 win over Icheon saw them dislodge Cheonan who went down 1-0 at home to Cheongju. Bucheon FC 1995 are level with United at the top on points after their 4-2 win away against Seoul Martyrs, and Samcheok Sinwoo moved into third after destroying Namyangju 5-1.
