INGNEX expelled from National League

The National League, the second tier of football in Korea, will operate with thirteen teams for the 2008 season after it was confirmed that INGNEX would be expelled from the competition after just one season in the league.

INGNEX initially applied to join the National League for the 2006 season but their application was rejected on financial grounds. The club reapplied in advance of the 2007 season and were admitted to the league, however a dispute between club officials and the local government of Yeosu, the city the club had planned to play their home fixtures in, left the side homeless for the entire 2007 season. With the club unable to make guarantees of financial viability and a specific home location and stadium, the National League voted to exclude them from the 2008 fixture list.

Further changes to the 2008 season include a switch to a four-team championship playoff series at the end of the regular season. The two stage winners, plus the two runners-up in each stage, will face off for the championship trophy. The champions will no longer be eligible for promotion to the K-League, with the National League keen to avoid the situations that arose in the previous two years when title-winning sides Ulsan Mipo Dockyard and Goyang Kookmin Bank both reneged on promises to seek promotion to the top flight. Instead, the National League will work towards professionalising the league in order to have a regular system of promotion and relegation in place within the next few years.

The 2008 National League season will kick off on April 5th, 2008.
