Jeonbuk celebrate first ever K-League title win

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors picked up the first K-League championship title in their fifteen year history as they overcame seven time winners Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in the 2009 Championship playoff final.

Having led from the front since the early stages of the season, Jeonbuk secured their place in the championship final by finishing four points clear of Pohang Steelers at the end of the regular league season. Seongnam, who finished fourth overall, overcame Incheon United, Chunnam Dragons and Pohang in the previous playoff rounds for the right to face Jeonbuk in the final, and the two sides played out a goalless draw in Seongnam in the first leg last Wednesday.

Chunma travelled to Jeonju for the second leg with high hopes of lifting the title, however Brazilian star Enio Oliveira Junior put the home side ahead with a 21st minute free kick effort that sailed past national team squad goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong. Enio netted his second of the match six minutes from the break to send Motors in two goals up at half time.

Although Seongnam picked up the pace in the second half, Jeonbuk extended their lead from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute with former Seongnam forward and 2009 top scorer Lee Dong-guk netting his 21st goal of an impressive league campaign to send the 36,246 fans in the stadium wild with delight. Kim Jin-yong grabbed a consolation for Seongnam six minutes from time, but Jeonbuk were not to be denied a great victory and their first league title.
