National League confirm Mipo sanctions

The National League have confirmed details of the punishment to be handed down to 2007 champions Ulsan Mipo Dockyard for their decision to decline promotion to the K-League.

Mipo, who became eligible for promotion to the top flight after winning the National League championship with a controversial 7-1 aggregate victory over Suwon City, announced in the aftermath of that triumph that they were reversing their earlier decision that they would seek promotion.

At the second 2008 meeting of the National League subcommittee, it was decided that Mipo would be handed a ten point deduction in the 2008 National League, to be split into five point deductions in both the first and second stages of the season. Additionally the club owners have been requested to provide a written apology, along with written guarantees that the team will seek promotion on the next occasion it becomes eligible to do so.

The punishment is less severe than that handed down to Goyang Kookmin Bank, who rejected promotion to the K-League after claiming the 2006 National League title. Goyang were deducted twenty points prior to the start of the 2007 season, however their decision not to submit an apology or guarantees of future promotion were factors in the final decision.
