Perfect start for both Koreas in WC qualifiers

South Korea opened their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign in perfect fashion with a 4-0 win over Turkmenistan at the Seoul World Cup stadium.

The home side dominated the first half but struggled to put visiting goalkeeper Baramaniyaz Derdiyev under much pressure, with Park Joo-young guilty of spurning two great opportunities early on. Just as the first half was drawing to a close, Chunnam Dragons defender Kwak Tae-hwi lept to meat a Seol Ki-hyeon cross and his header looped over the goalkeeper and into the net, ending Korea's 550 minute goal drought.

Huh Jung-moo's men stepped up a gear in the second half, and added to their goal tally with the help of two Premiership-based stars. Seol Ki-hyeon grabbed a double and Park Ji-sung curled an unstoppable shot into the right corner of the net to confirm an emphatic scoreline.

The two Koreas will meet at the Kim Il-sung stadium in Pyeongyang on March 26th in the second round of Group C World Cup qualifiers, but will also play out a dress rehearsal at the East Asian Football Championships later this month in China.
