Suwon Samsung Bluewings rounded off a disappointing 2009 season in the best way possible as they overcame rivals Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma on penalties in the Korean FA Cup final, securing the second cup victory in their history and a spot in the 2010 AFC Champions League tournament.
The match, which was played at Seongnam's temporary home venue of Moran stadium, saw the home side take the lead through Montenegran forward Dzenan Radoncic in the 26th minute, and looked to be heading the way of Shin Tae-yong's men until Kim Tae-hyun conceded a penalty three minutes from time. Brazilian forward Edu stepped up to smash home the equaliser and send the final into extra time.
With no more scoring throughout the added thirty minutes the game went to penalties, and national team goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae was the hero for the Bluewings as his saves from Kim Sung-hwan and Jeon Kwang-jin afforded ex-Seongnam star Kim Dae-eui the chance to win the cup, and he smashed the ball home to claim Suwon's first FA Cup triumph since 2002.
