Suwon Samsung Bluewings lifted the 2008 K-League championship trophy on Sunday as their 2-1 home victory over FC Seoul gave them their fourth title crown 3-2 on aggregate after the 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Brazilian forward Eduardo Goncalves de Oliveira gave the home side the lead in the 11th minute, but Suwon's lead lasted until the 25th minute of the match when goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae fouled Lee Chung-yong in the box and Jung Jo-guk stepped up to slam home from the penalty spot.
Suwon were awarded a penalty of their own after FC Seoul defender Kim Chi-kon brought down Edu in the box, and though Kim Ho-joon saved Song Jong-guk's initial spot-kick effort, the ex-Feyenoord defender poked home the rebound to restore his team's lead.
Although FC Seoul came close in the second half they were unable to peg Suwon back to level terms, and the Bluewings held on to add the championship to the Hauzen Cup trophy they claimed in October to complete a double of K-League competition victories. The title victory is manager Cha Bum-keun's second in charge of Suwon, having previously won the title in his debut season in 2004, and the club's fourth overall since joining the league in 1996. Victors in 1998 and 1999, they join Busan and Pohang on four league championship crowns, joint-second in the overall table behind Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma with seven titles to their name.
Suwon, as K-League champions, and FC Seoul, as runners-up, will represent Korea in the revamped 2009 AFC Champions League competition along with Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i and the winners of the 2008 FA Cup.
