Jeonbuk have struggled to make an impact in the K-League during their previous 12 seasons, however in 2006 the club won the Asian Champions League.
Despite the backing of Hyundai, the club struggled at the foot of the league for the entire 2005 season and, although finishing second bottom of the table, they rounded off the season with their third FA Cup win.
The 2005 FA Cup victory gained the side entry to the 2006 AFC Champions League tournament and, after impressive victories over Gamba Osaka, Dalian Shide, Shanghai Shenhua and Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i, they edged out Syrians Al-Karama 3-2 on aggregate to claim the crown of champions of Asia.
