Founder members of the K-League, Pohang Steelers were the dominant club during the early years winning three titles and securing two runner-up spots in the first ten years.
The club fell away domestically during the 1990s but were still able to scale the heights of Asian football in 1997 and 1998.
They reached the championship playoff in 2004 but lost out on penalties to Suwon Samsung Bluewings. The club were back in the title playoffs for 2006 but lost out again to Suwon, this time at the semi-final stage.
The long wait for a fourth championship came to an end in 2007 as Farias' side stormed to victory during the championship playoffs. Fifth in the regular league season, Pohang defeated Gyeongnam, Ulsan, Suwon and then Seongnam to claim the championship crown in spectacular fashion.
