Suwon Samsung Bluewings have grown to become one of Asia's most successful club sides during their relatively short existence. Founded in 1996, they won their first K-league Championship in 1998 and twice scaled the heights of Asian club football by winning the Asian Club Championship in 2001 and 2002. Despite being managed by legendary Korean footballer Cha Bum-keun and boasting a squad full of superstars, the Bluewings endured a torrid and injury-ridden 2005 and finished in their lowest ever position in the K-League, stuttering home in ninth place in the combined rankings. After a poor first stage in 2006, the summer signings of Baek Ji-hoon and Lee Kwan-woo in particular powered the club to the second stage title and all the way to the championship playoffs where they lost out 3-1 on aggregate to Seongnam. |
